Administration officials confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on Friday, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official procedure for letting employees go.

Although Vought provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services used by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide essential functions to communities across the country,” said Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican proposal, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

The layoffs took place on the same day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck for the final days of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the shutdown.
